Product Description This unit features a powerful 4.9 amp motor with keyless chuck for convenient bit installation and removal. It has a large trigger switch for easy operation. Drill a variety of materials at variable speeds (0 - 2,500 rpm). This drill is easy on the ears with a low decibel rating (79dB) for quieter operation. Its in-line handle design means maximum power thrust. It has a large recessed lock-on button and the reversing switch is conveniently located. Makitas all ball bearing construction means longer tool life. Your purchase includes keyless chuck.

Well Balanced June 21, 2005 James B. Gargas (Illinois) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This drill packs alot of power for only 4.9 amps. The tool is very well balanced and very quiet. I would have given it 5 stars if not for the "unremoveable" chuck. The owners manual does not give any instructions on how to remove nor is there any discernable fiting inside the chuck. All in all a good drill with ample power. Remember Makita makes their own motors.
The chuck is removable July 10, 2006 Bruce333 (Smithfield, NC United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
After breaking the keyless chuck (don't ask). I too was stumped as to how to remove it. I finally decided I had nothing to lose by taking the drill apart. After clamping the broken end of the chuck in a vise, I was able to apply enough force to the gear to unscrew the shaft from the chuck. A new replacement chuck screws back on the same way.
This is a great drill and I'm very pleased with it's performance.

Excellent drill.
I bought this to use on an as-needed basis and ended up using it a whole lot.
It is really well built and worth the little bit more that you might spend versus a competitor.
Just get it... and hang shelves, adjust everything, install an A/C, build something from random Home Depot parts.. whatever. Very handy tool.
Perfectly adequate drill for homeowner/hobbyist January 21, 2010 Michael Gainer (Silicon Valley, CA USA) I've owned a copy of this drill for a few years now, and it's held up pretty well. I have not really asked it to do heavy-duty remodeling or contractor-level work, but in comparison to a Craftsman, it is holding up *much* better. Bearing and gear noise are about the same as when new. (whereas the Craftsman is obviously galling its bearings). When driving many screws (10s, but not 100s) the exhaust air gets noticeably hot, enough so that I explicitly let it cool off. That said, though, it's been good enough that I got a pair for my father for Christmas, and he uses tools _hard_.
