Amazon.com Review This kit combines Makita's much-touted 14.4-volt cordless drill with a stout little job site flashlight that runs off the same long-life NiMH battery. Compared to standard nickel-cadmium batteries, the enviromentally friendly NiMH gives you 30% longer run time and boasts an impressive 2.2 amp hrs. The drill is a little heavier than some of its competitors, but its ergonomic design and extremely well-balanced construction more than make up for its extra weight. In fact, this drill, which delivers the most torque of any drill in its class, was the winner of Popular Science's Best of What's New award in December 1998. The drill's distinctive tip-up design makes for easy use all day either overhead or at shoulder height. Clutch settings change easily, too, and the amount of trigger response in both speed settings (up to the maximum 1,300 rpm) caught our attention. In particular, the Makita has remarkable touch at slow speeds--unlike many other similar drills--which of course lets you start drilling and driving with maximum control. The tight-gripping, 3/8-inch keyless chuck system works great. And--like practically everyone else in the world--we really appreciate the attention to detail and quality in Makita's legendary motor. Simply put, this is a tool designed for extended use under the toughest job site conditions. The tool's brushes are accessible from the outside, too, and easily replaced--a handy feature you won't find with other brands. --Justin Paul

best cordless drill i've ever owned November 17, 1999 gregory s smith (gasser@allegan.net) (allegan, michigan) 39 out of 39 found this review helpful
i buy 2 cordless drills a year. i've always bought panasonic or dewalt in the past. although i've only owned this drill a short time it has become my alltime favorite. the balance, power, and long lasting battery are the best i've ever experienced. the owners manual is the best tool manual i've ever read. it offers easy to understand instuctions, specific part numbers, and even helpful maintenace and repair instructions, such as how to change brushes. Amazon did a great job in shipping. i ordered on friday they confirmed my order within an hour, e-mailed me shipping confirmation on monday and i received the tool on wednesday. i am very happy with this purchase.
perfect for all your driving needs January 22, 2000 Christopher J. Klugewicz (East TN, USA) 42 out of 43 found this review helpful
I use a Panasonic cordless drill for all my portable drilling, but this Makita is always at hand to drive the screws. It has fantastic torque, a seemingly limitless range of speeds (especially at the low end, which is vital for a good power screwdriver), and an electric brake for a positive stop -- important for driving into hardwoods, where you can shear the head off a soft (i.e. brass) screw if you're not careful. The battery life is outstanding, and with NiMH technology, you don't have to worry about overcharging. The drill is nicely balanced for its weight, and the keyless chuck is easy to use. It also has an adjustable torque limiter. The flashlight in the package is a nice bonus, and with the 14.4V battery pack, lasts a very long time on a charge.
The most electrifying drill on the market today November 11, 1999 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
This is definitely one of the best cordless drills you can buy. The handle fits my hands extremely well. The spring loaded battery releases are the best in the industry. No need to worry about power, this drill will twist you wrist off before it bogs down.
Good Buy November 25, 1999 21 out of 24 found this review helpful
Great drill, everything you would need in a cordless drill! The keyless chuck is much better than a DeWalt and it comes with the latest battery technology.
Short Battery Life! December 9, 2001 Christopher Michelsen (Fairfield, iowa United States) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I originally gave this drill a 5 but I would change this if they would allow it. I have two Porter Cables with Nicad batteries that are many years and hours older than the two of these NIMH Makitas and they are still running strong while the NIMH makitas are; one dead, and the other dying.
NIMH batteries have a little more time of use per charge than Nicads but you pay dearly for this with about half the overall battery life. At $70 each you may as well buy a new drill. ...I am looking for one, something with Nicads.
